In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer, discovers a vibrant city and uncovers other treasures of Phnom Penh - More Than the Killing Fields. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours to Cambodia.

In my last post from Southeast Asia, our group concluded our visit to Vietnam by visiting the Mekong Delta where we spent a day exploring this watery wonderland. However, this epic journey through three countries with Adventures Abroad has not come to an end as we will now head to Cambodia for the final five days of the tour. The main attraction in Cambodia is of course the temple complexes around the city of Siem Reap, most notably Angkor Wat and that's where the trip will end. However, the city of Phnom Penh, once known as 'The Pearl of Asia', is the starting point for most visits to Cambodia. Unfortunately, it is more well known today for its role in the infamous Killing Fields than for its beautiful location on the Mekong River, the charms of its temples and the treasures of its museums. Yes, we will visit the Killing Fields, but in this post, I'll concentrate on the brighter side of Phnom Penh, because that's really more a reflection of the city today than what happened here fifty years ago.

This is my ninth and final post from our 2023 trip to Vietnam with Adventures Abroad. In the last post, our group toured Saigon and found out that the entrepreneurial spirit there marks it as quite different from Hanoi. In this last post, we'll head down to the Mekong Delta where the majority of Vietnam's rice is grown and most of its fish is either wild-caught or farm raised. It is an area that is under siege from rising ocean levels that threaten to drown much of it over the next fifty years. It is also the home of one of the most unique religions in the world and that's where we'll start our visit.

This is my second post from Chile and the first one that deals specifically with a day on the Adventures Abroad itinerary. In the first one, I gave an overview of Chile and why going with Adventures Abroad was my preferred way to see this amazing country from top to bottom with Easter Island as a once-in-a-lifetime finale. In this post, we are going to head out from Santiago for the day to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Valparaiso, mostly on foot and then conclude with a great seafood dinner in the upscale sister city of Viña del Mar. Valparaiso is a city that has long been on my bucket list so please join us as we start our exploration of Chile in earnest.

Saigon - Definitely Not Ho Chi Minh City

In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer, uncovers some unique and interesting discoveries about Saigon - Definitely Not Ho Chi Minh City. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours to Vietnam.

In the last post, we wrapped up our time in central Vietnam by visiting the fascinating city of Hue and now it's time to head to the south of the country for our final few days of this wonderful Adventures Abroad tour. Accordingly, we take the 90-minute flight from Hue to Ho Chi Minh City which I soon learn from our local guide is a name that no one who actually lives here uses. To the South Vietnamese, it is and always will be Saigon and that's how I'll refer to it in this post. So please join me in exploring just a little of this greatest of all Vietnamese cities.

Epirus - Zagoria, Vikos Gorge & Ioannina
Published on 12 May 2024

In his latest blog post, Dale Dunlop, The Maritime Explorer, reaches the end of the Via Egnatia Tour and finishes with a flourish at Epirus - Zagoria, Vikos Gorge & Ioannina. If you are interested in what Adventures Abroad has to offer, please check out our Small Group Tours to Turkey or Small Group Tours to Greece.

This is my fifteenth and final post from the spring 2023 Via Egnatia Tour sponsored by Adventures Abroad and led by our friend and fellow birding enthusiast, tour leader Victor Romagnoli. It has been a wild ride from Istanbul to Ioannina with many amazing sites along the way that are seldom offered on most tours of Greece and Turkey. For example, in the last post, we found ourselves the only tourists walking along the waterfront of the city of Kastoria admiring the mansions of the bygone fur traders who put the place on the map. In this post, we'll venture high into the Pindus Mountains in the most northwesterly province of Greece, Epirus. Only miles from the border of Albania, we'll explore the stone villages and bridges of Zagoria, then marvel at Vikos Gorge, one of the natural wonders of Greece and finally end our tour at the city of Ioannina where we'll walk the streets of a city still dominated by traces of the Ottomans who ruled the city for almost 500 years. It promises to be one hell of an ending for a trip that has had a touch of everything an aspiring adventurer could want.
