More About South Africa
For a country famed for the wildlife found in its game parks, South Africa often comes as a surprise to travellers. Truth is, South Africa tours showcase so much more than just lions, leopards, and elephants. South Africa holds a dynamic culture, thriving cities, and an interesting history. Best of all, every corner of this country is a backdrop of jaw-dropping scenery with plenty of once in a lifetime experiences to be discovered.
Found on the southernmost tip of Africa, South Africa is home to a stunning array of diversity. The flat table mountains of Cape Town rise above the Atlantic Ocean, with steep cliffs and rocky outcrops that are home to a number of animals and approximately 1,470 species of plants. In the valleys found beneath and beyond these mountains are vineyards such as Stellenbosch, Durbanville and more that have become known for their quality as well as history in being the oldest vineyards outside of Europe. On our South Africa tours you'll sip your way through Chenin-Blancs, the premier grape that the country is known for, while you discover a culinary scene that is unexpected and world-class.
Heading away from the coastline that stretches over 2,500 kilometres (1,600 miles), one will discover red sandstone of Blyde River Canyon, the great escarpment with magnificent panoramic views. Cliffs rise between 600 m and 800 m (2,000-2,640 feet) from the river bed with huge rock spirals rising out of the canyon and tops that appear to have a hut-like rounded roof. It is an unexpected landscape in one that conjures up so many images of bushveld. These subtropical woodlands are indeed covering much of the country, and are the home to many of the prized animal species found in South Africa.
On our South Africa tours we will be on the lookout for the 'Big Five'; the lion, leopard, rhinoceros (both black and white species), elephant, and Cape buffalo. With stops in Kruger National Park, an enormous area of flat veld broken by rivers and comprised of mixed vegetation and terrain, one will be on the lookout for some of the 137 mammal species, 49 fish species, 112 reptile species, and nearly 500 bird species that are located within Kruger. While those who enjoy big game will inevitably love a visit to Kruger, bird watchers will enjoy a chance to explore the Mkuze Game reserve, with more than 420 different bird species on record.
Beyond the flora, fauna, and geographic wonders found in abundance on our South Africa tours, it is also an interesting cultural experience for visitors. From finding a skull that is more than 36,000 years old, we know that South Africa has had settlements for a very long period of time. But it is the recent history that tends to leave more of an impression.
With Apartheid only coming to an end in the 1990s, our South Africa tours are not complete without understanding this brutal and discriminatory part of history. At the Robben Island historic site, formerly an infamous prison and today a museum, one can learn about Apartheid era freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela, who were incarcerated at Robben Island. The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is equally as insightful. Both shed light on the extremely heavy topic of recent segregation.
A visit to South Africa is often thought of as the best introduction to a continent of contrasts, as it is comfortable yet exciting, interesting yet personable. It is a country where anything seems possible and memories are easily made.
