There is perhaps no other tour destination in the world that can make travellers more aware of their apparent insignificant stature than can Tanzania. Tanzania sits on the east coast of Africa, borders eight other African countries and has a magnificent coastline on the Indian Ocean. The nation takes its name from the 1964 union between the mainland territory, Tanganyika, and the Zanzibar islands to the east. Remarkably, this once German colony has largely managed to steer clear of the many domestic and international troubles that have plagued its neighbours.

Tanzania may not be the largest nation in Africa, though, it is without doubt one of the most exciting countries in the world. The Serengeti, which is found in the north of Tanzania, is itself so vast that you can drive for an entire day and not encounter any other human being. However, with over 70 mammal species and 500 bird species, there is no doubt whether you will ever be truly alone in this natural wonder that encompasses grasslands, swamps and woodlands.

The name "Serengeti" derives from a Maasai word meaning "Land-without-end." This is a land of superlatives, both in the vast landscape that surrounds you and the incredible biodiversity it supports. It is here that you have a chance to witness one of the most compelling natural dramas on earth. The annual migration is where up to 1.5 million wildebeest and a half a million zebra embark on a single-minded and perilous quest for water and grazing land.

Elsewhere and equally memorable within Tanzania is Kilimanjaro National Park, home to the indescribable wonder: Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 5,895 metres (19,340 feet) above sea level, Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and the world's highest free-standing mountain. This truly is a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed and chances are, it will cause revision of the definitions of the words beautiful, awesome, and immense in the minds of travellers.

As with all Tanzania tours, and like many of the national parks, Kilimanjaro National Park allows visitors to view some of the most remarkable and exotic animals on the planet. Elephants, hippos, wildebeest, rhinos, monkeys, crocodiles, big cats or birds: you name it; Tanzania has it.

A wildlife sighting not to be missed on Tanzania tours is the famous tree-climbing lions, which can be found at Lake Manyara National Park, and though each national park has its own allure. The Serengeti National Park, which is itself often synonymous with safari expeditions, is considered home by more game animals than anywhere else on the planet.
