Frequently Asked Questions
- Do you need a visa to travel to Portugal?Citizens from the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not need a visa when travelling to Portugal if they intend to stay for up to 90 days. EU citizens only need a passport to travel to Portugal and can stay indefinitely.
- Is Portugal safe?Compared with other western countries, the levels of crime in Portugal are low. That said, petty crime (including theft, bag snatching and pickpocketing) does happen in cities and tourist areas. Foreigners are advised to take sensible precautions, such as keeping valuables out of sight and ensuring they don’t travel around with large sums of cash.
- When is the best time to visit Portugal?Portugal is very much a year-round destination but the weather varies quite significantly between regions and different seasons. The south receives the least amount of rain and most sunshine, but you can expect plenty of sunny days throughout the rest of the country. Overall, the best time to visit Portugal is during spring (March-May) and early autumn (September- October) when temperatures average around 20°C. While winter is cooler and sometimes gets stormy, most days enjoy between 4-6 hours of daily sun.
