After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and begin our drive to Dambulla, a journey that takes us through the scenic countryside of Sri Lanka. Along the way, we'll make a stop to visit the magnificent Aukana Buddha, a 12-meter (39-foot) statue that is believed to have been sculpted in the 5th century AD. The statue's name, "Aukana," means "sun-eating," which refers to its alignment with the dawn, creating a striking visual effect as the sun rises. We'll take a moment to admire the statue's serene expression and intricate details, and appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that went into creating this ancient masterpiece.
The drive from Aukana to Dambulla takes approximately 1 hour, passing through rolling hills and rural landscapes. As we arrive in Dambulla, we'll have the opportunity to explore the lively local market, a bustling bazaar filled with an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. The market is a hub of activity, with vendors selling their produce to be shipped to Colombo for sale the following day. We'll get a glimpse into the daily lives of the local people and maybe even pick up some fresh produce or local handicrafts.
We'll then visit Minneriya National Park, a haven for nature lovers, known for its impressive gatherings of elephants.The park’s rich landscapes, from forested areas to serene wetlands, provide an immersive wildlife experience, where you can observe these magnificent creatures in a pristine, untouched environment.
After checking into our hotel, we'll embark on a tour of Dambulla's main attraction, the Royal Rock Temple complex. This ancient site is spread across five caves, featuring an impressive array of statues and paintings that date back to the 1st century BC. We'll explore the caves, marveling at the intricate artwork and learning about the rich history and cultural significance of the site. The Hindu statues, which were added later, are thought to date back to the 12th century AD, while the most recent paintings were created in the late 18th century. The Dambulla Caves are a unique historical site, showcasing a fascinating blend of cultural influences from various eras, and we'll gain a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage.
