Chris spent the pandemic era taking Spanish, Italian & French lessons, learned the Cyrillic & Arabic alphabets, and is currently inspired to improve his Greek vocabulary in order to impress η νονά του στο Ροδος.

Chris has not led tours to Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, or Grenada. But he has led tours in over 110 of the remaining countries.

The wanderlust has taken him to basing himself in places such as Scotland, Australia and Uzbekistan, and to visiting many more locations around our planet. Where to begin? Each place has something that makes it a special destination. A few that spring to mind: Kaieteur Falls in Guyana; the snow-covered mountains of Ladakh, India; sipping tea in a chaikhana of the old town of Bukhara, Uzbekistan; and watching the changing colours of Uluru (Ayers Rock) at sunset.

Some of my favourite tours just come into being suddenly as a result of a request; someone will ask me to put together an itinerary that will include the highlights of several countries and the next thing you know we have, for example, a tour to Uruguay, Paraguay & Bolivia, or Lesotho, Namibia & Botswana. Sometimes I will be asked to arrange a detailed itinerary to just one region within a country - like a close up look at Sicily or Crete or the Basque Country or Newfoundland. Without the keen curiosity that so many of you travellers have, none of these "spontaneous" tours would come into being. But they do.

01. Do you need a visa to travel to the Gulf States?
Foreign nationals from the US, Canada, Australia, Britain, and certain other EU countries must obtain a visa when travelling to the following nations in the Gulf states: Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. Your passport must also be valid for at least six months when your visa is issued.
02. Are the Gulf States safe?
Due to the instability of the region, many people ask is it safe to travel to the Gulf States? In general, the answer is yes. The majority of countries in the region are safe to travel around and have low levels of crime. That said, with ongoing tensions and security concerns in certain areas, anyone travelling to the Gulf States should check the latest advice from their own government and keep updated with the latest developments.
03. When is the best time to visit the Gulf States?
The best time to visit the Gulf States is between October to April. At this time of year, pleasantly warm temperatures are ideal for exploring the region’s iconic sites. In summer (May-September) the heat can be stifling throughout much of the region. In places such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, temperatures can go into the high 40°Cs. Pack for colder weather during the winter. Nights can be cold in many parts of the Gulf States, particularly in more northerly countries such as Kuwait.
