More About Kenya
Safari is a word that simply means travel in Swahili, but for many, it alludes to images first envisioned in childhood: sweeping savannahs, big snarling cats, thundering herds of elephant and wildebeest. Like its meaning, the word stimulates the imagination, evoking other words and places, like Serengeti, Sahara, or Kilimanjaro. Safari crosses the landscape of the mind, until it finally merges with the name of the great continent itself, Africa.
On Kenya safari tours, our comfortable, hotel and lodge-based tour of the best game parks of Kenya reflects our intimate acquaintance with the best that East Africa has to offer. A land of glacier-coated mountains, arid plains and thick rainforest, giant escarpments visible from space, Kenya lays claim to a spectrum of diversity that few countries can rival. Kenya safari tours offer dramatic landscapes with some of the best locations for wildlife viewing and photography in the world.
Discovering the 'Big Five' (the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and rhinoceros) for the first time is beyond memorable. Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve consists of rolling grassland and is located at the northern end of the Serengeti Plain.
The Maasai Mara is actually a natural extension of the Serengeti ecosystem and has an amazing concentration of wildlife. The largest population of lions in Kenya is found here, along with large herds of plains game. The Maasai Mara may also be the best place in Kenya to view cheetah.
Considered the best of Kenya's parks, and a highlight on our Kenya safari tours, it is on the pathway of the yearly wildebeest migration in which the ground seems to shake as the 1.5 million wildebeest and half a million zebra embark on a single-minded and perilous quest for water and grazing land towards Tanzania's Serengeti National Park.
While the emphasis of these Kenya safari tours is the often incredible natural history of the region, there will also be opportunities to meet some of the many ethnic groups that make up the diverse population.
The Central Highlands is the heartland of the Kikuyu people. This is a very fertile region, lush, intensively cultivated and thickly forested. It is also the same area of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, where we have the chance to see buffalo, cheetah, leopard and lion and almost guaranteed close-up sightings of elephant, giraffe and gazelle. It is also home to East Africa's largest Black Rhino sanctuary, the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, and holds some of the highest predator densities in Kenya.
For birders, few places rival the majestic beauty of the Great Rift Valley, home to 340 species of birds that have been recorded. African fish eagles, maccoa ducks, various vultures, pallid harrier, grey-crowned cranes, buzzards and kites, plovers and lapwings, falcons and kestrels and many more create a wonderful opportunity to admire the smaller animals that make up Kenya's biodiversity.
Within the valley, lies Lake Nakuru which is very shallow and can fluctuate up to five metres (12 feet) each day; famous for the incredible masses of flamingos that congregate beyond its white band of crystallized soda along the shoreline.
Rich in abundance, Kenya is a destination of choice for many styles of safaris. For those wishing to discover a variety of common or endangered, large or small, Kenya safari tours have a bit of each for everyone.
