More About Italy

There are few places in the world rivalling the package of culture, history, and cuisine that Italy offers. Inhabited for thousands of years, Italy was the centre of the civilized world after the arrival of the Romans nearly two thousand years ago.

The Eternal City of Rome is as classic as it is inspiring, and is always a favourite on our small tours of Italy. Within the city limits are sights such as the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain.

From ancient empires to the seat of a world religion, small tours of Italy with Adventures Abroad provide the chance to see the unforgettable in comfort, learn from an expert local guide and enjoy the sights at a perfect pace.

Highlights include St Peter's Basilica, with an interior that can hold up to 60,000 people, and delicate details designed by Michelangelo. Small tours of Italy offer a chance to see masterpieces from the world's best artists and understand their inspiration.

Religion plays an important role within Italy, both historically and currently, with beautiful cathedrals and churches in every village. Pilgrims flock to various sites including Assisi, the hometown of St Francis. Wine for the church service was crafted in nearby vineyards. Places like Tuscany, which is notorious for its reputation of vineyards and walled cities found amongst the hillsides.

Culture and cuisine go hand in hand with art capitals such as nearby Florence, with its Italian masterpieces in museums such as the Uffizi Gallery as well as in the medieval towns such as Siena with Romanesque and Italian Gothic style buildings around every corner.

Architectural wonders are found across the country, with an ancient looking Manhattan skyline at San Gimignano and the gravity-defying Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Italy is a truly Mediterranean country with a coastline of 7,600 km, boasting some of the best seaside towns. Venice, once a great trading empire with the Middle East during the 13th to 15th centuries and the famous home of Marco Polo, retains many old world charms thanks to its canals and exquisite piazzas.

On the opposite coast, Cinque Terre is one of Italy's premier walks with remarkable vistas along rugged coastal villages.

In the south, our Italian tours take a cruise along the Amalfi coastline to the resort town found on a winding road carved out of the rock in the mid-19th century.

Further south and separated by only 4km from the mainland, Sicily and its capital Palermo, is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its 2,700 year existence.

Agriculturally rich, the fertile soil found in the shadow of Mt Etna produces some of the finest ingredients found in Sicilian dishes: cactus pears, fresh figs and grapes, fat olives, fresh capers, zucchini blossoms, fresh ricotta and pungent pecorino cheese. The active volcano stands at 3,313 m tall and is in constant threat of eruption.

Perhaps the greatest disaster in Italian history, a highlight of Italian tours, is the visit to the city of Pompeii, which was destroyed following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Dug out from the ashes, the entire area is a fantastic record of how ordinary Romans lived their lives. The archaeological site stands in stark contrast to the nearby hustle and bustle of Naples with its beautiful harbour and 12th century fortress.

In a country with a history that shaped western civilization, a landscape that has inspired artists for centuries, and an attitude that is warm and welcome, Italy is a truly remarkable destination.
