More About Ecuador
A country with an envied amount of diversity, Ecuadorian Amazon tours, or a tour to Galapagos Islands from Ecuador appeal to those who wish to interact with wildlife, explore colonial cities, and witness local life in timeless mountain villages. A small but mighty nation, Ecuador is one of South America's premier travel destinations.
Situated on the equator, Ecuador is bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Within its continental borders, one can explore both the Amazon Rainforest and Andean peaks.
Similar to its variety in landscapes, Ecuador tours showcase an ethnically diverse population, comprised of mestizos of European, Amerindian, and African descendants. Long before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, another great civilization ruled the lands: the Inca Empire. For less than a century, the Incas reigned over the Ecuadorian highlands while leaving the Amazon and coastal regions as the inhabitants and environments proved too hostile.
Ecuador's most important Inca site, Ingapirca, is located in the Canar Valley at 3,165 m (10,445 feet). Ingapirca is a monumental complex, built up on top of other Canari ruins some 500 years ago by the Inca empire. The mortarless stonework of the Temple of the Sun is surrounded by a labyrinth of terraces and chambers in ruins.
Many important Incan sites were occupied by the Spanish and have become some of Ecuador's most beautiful cities. Cuenca (2,648 m / 8,738 feet), once an Incan site, is now marked by narrow cobblestone streets, quaint parks and romantic plazas. Only connected to Quito by paved roads in the 1960s, those who enjoy Quito's centuries-old architecture will certainly enjoy Cuenca's charm.
Nearly 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a marvel of nature and, for wildlife lovers, an absolute must-see. This island archipelago is composed of a dozen large islands, with smaller volcanic islands, numbering in the hundreds, surrounding them. The Galapagos Islands owe their fame to Charles Darwin, a naturalist who visited them in 1835, and was inspired by them to form his theories of evolution.
On our tours of Ecuador one will see the specially adapted plants and animals of the Galapagos up close, as well as the unusual volcanic terrain formations, home to thousands of iguanas, sea and land birds, ancient tortoises, sea lions, as well as unusual vegetation, including cacti.
For birders, whether you are on our Ecuadorian Amazon tours or a tour to Galapagos Islands from Ecuador, you will marvel at the amazing diversity of bird species. Some of the unique bird species found on the Galapagos Islands include American Oystercatchers, Yellow Warblers, Hood mockingbirds, the Espanola mockingbird, the Galapagos hawk, Nazca boobies and more. A prize among birders is to spot the Red-billed Tropicbird, often found feeding near colonies of sea lions.
On our Ecuadorian Amazon tours, new birding opportunities are presented, in what is seemingly an entirely new world. In the Andes, the updrafts give birders the opportunity to spot the majestic Andean Condor, riding the thermal updrafts, and far below them, the alpacas breed in the Cajas National Park.
Ecuador, like most of its South American neighbours, fought for independence in the early part of the 19th century, ultimately achieving it. While Ecuador was not to become a large country, in no small part due to the strength of the countries surrounding it, it has revealed itself as a land of diverse landscapes, and one of the most bio-diverse on the planet.
