More About Ecuador

A country with an envied amount of diversity, Ecuadorian tours appeal to those who wish to interact with wildlife, explore colonial cities, and witness local life in timeless mountain villages. A small but mighty nation, Ecuador is one of South America's premier travel destinations.

Situated on the equator, Ecuador is bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Within its continental borders, one can explore both the Amazon Rainforest and Andean peaks.

Similar to its variety in landscapes, Ecuador tours showcase an ethnically diverse population, comprised of mestizos of European, Amerindian, and African descendants. Long before the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, another great civilization ruled the lands: the Inca Empire. For less than a century, the Incas reigned over the Ecuadorian highlands while leaving the Amazon and coastal regions as the inhabitants and environments proved too hostile.

Ecuador's most important Inca site, Ingapirca, is located in the Canar Valley at 3165 m (10,445 feet). Ingapirca is a monumental complex, built up on top of other Canari ruins some 500 years ago by the Inca empire. The mortarless stonework of the Temple of the Sun is surrounded by a labyrinth of terraces and chambers in ruins.

Many important Incan sites were occupied by the Spanish and have become some of Ecuador's most beautiful cities. Cuenca (2648 m / 8,738 feet), once an Incan site, is now marked by narrow cobblestone streets, quaint parks and romantic plazas. Only connected to Quito by paved roads in the 1960s, those who enjoy Quito'™s centuries-old architecture, will certainly enjoy Cuenca'™s charm.

Found 1000 km offshore, the Galapagos Islands are a natural marvel and a must-see for wildlife lovers. An archipelago of 12 large and several hundred smaller volcanic islands rose to international fame with the visit of Charles Darwin in 1835 and inspired his first theories of evolution. On our Ecuadorian tours, we enjoy up-close views of unusual, specially-adapted animals, plants and terrains including sea lions, tortoises, iguanas, land and sea birds, volcanic landscapes, unusual cacti and vegetation.

Birders have a unique opportunity on Ecuadorian tours to experience the unique diversity of the country. In the Galapagos, one can spot an array of birds from Galapagos hawks, American Oystercatchers, Galapagos Ground Doves, Hood mockingbirds, Yellow Warblers, Espanola mockingbird, Nazca Boobies and the spectacular Red-billed Tropicbird feeding near sea lion colonies. In what feels like an entirely other world high in the Andes, the Andean Condor can sometimes be spotted riding the thermal updrafts above the alpacas breeding in Cajas National Park.

Like most of South America, Ecuador fought for its independence in the early 19th century and ultimately won. The strength of its neighbours at the time ensured that Ecuador would not become a large country in size however the vast variety within its borders have put this country on a short list of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Join us in discovering the beauty of Ecuador.
