- 15 Days
- Three days in Prague on foot — Charles Bridge, Old Town, and the Vysehrad ramparts
- Walking the Ringstrasse and the Vienna Woods wine trail above Nussdorf
- Budapest's forested Buda Hills by chairlift
- A privately guided deep-dive into Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage site
- Spa promenades and forest springs in Marianske Lazne
- Heidelberg's Philosopher's Walk and Stift Neuburg Abbey before transfer to the Olympiad
The route follows the rivers westward — from the Danube at Budapest through Prague, Bamberg, Rothenburg, and Heidelberg to Luxembourg — tracing the arc of Central European civilisation from the eastern edge of the old Habsburg world to its German-speaking heartland. Budapest and Vienna anchor the opening days; Prague holds the centre. West of Prague, the pace shifts: two days of spa-town walking and forest trails at Marianske Lazne, then Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage site explored in full, then Rothenburg's medieval walls and the quiet Tauber Valley. Heidelberg closes the tour with the Philosopher's Walk and a hike to Stift Neuburg Abbey before the transfer to Luxembourg.

- Seasonality and Weather:
This tour runs in late spring, generally one of the most pleasant times to travel through Central Europe. Across the routing from Budapest to Luxembourg, late May and early June bring mild to warm conditions, long daylight hours, and the region's parks, vineyards, and forest trails at their greenest.
Budapest and Vienna are warm and lively in early June, with outdoor café culture in full swing. Prague in early June sits comfortably before the peak summer crowds arrive. Bamberg and Rothenburg in early June are at their most picturesque, with roses in bloom on Cathedral Hill and the Tauber Valley in full green. Heidelberg in mid-June is warm, with the castle and hillside trails at their best.
Central Europe receives precipitation fairly evenly across the year, so some rain is always possible regardless of timing. That said, late May to mid-June represents some of the most reliably comfortable travel conditions in the region, and the extended daylight hours mean more time to enjoy each destination. - Transport and Travel Conditions:
Most transport on this tour is by large private air-conditioned coach. Due to the group size and to keep costs reasonable, we travel with one vehicle and ask that hand baggage on the bus be kept to a minimum, with main luggage stored in the hold.
This is a walking tour. Daily outings range from 3 to 9 kilometres over 1 to 4 hours, across a variety of surfaces — flat riverside promenades, cobblestone city streets, vineyard paths, forest trails, and medieval ramparts. Some days involve moderate elevation gain or loss, and some surfaces feature loose material such as gravel or uneven stone. Good walking footwear with solid tread is essential; walking poles are recommended and will support your knees on descents.
Our walking difficulty corresponds to a Level 3 rating: walks go beyond paved city touring to include natural surfaces and trails with some elevation, walked at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops. Not every day involves a hike, but across the full itinerary, participants will be on their feet regularly. Where large vehicles are impractical, we may walk to sightseeing points or make use of public transit.
Participants should be fit, active, and accustomed to trail walking — a conditioning program prior to departure is strongly recommended. For a full summary of daily walking activities, please refer to the tour itinerary.
Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form - Activity Level: 3
These tours are considerably more strenuous than our Level 1 & 2 "cultural" tours and feature walks/hikes on undulating and uneven pathways for 3-7 hours at a leisurely pace. We don't hike every day, but participants should be fit and active and accustomed to trail walking, possibly in remote locations, and be prepared to engage in a conditioning regimen prior to the trip. Altitude may also be a factor on some tours, though none of our hiking tours currently occur above 3000m/10,000 ft. These are hotel-based tours with no camping, and you are required to only carry what you need for the day.
