More About Spain
Spain occupies a certain type of paradise in Europe. Found on the western reaches of Europe with a long shoreline boasting coastal views into the deep azure waters of the Mediterranean, soaring peaks of granite found within the Pyrenees, and ancient cities with delicate details fit for royalty, Spain travel packages are able to include a bit of everything.
Ancient empires ranging from the Romans to the Carthenagans to the Moors have occupied what is now known as Spain on the Iberian Peninsula. For over one million years this land has been inhabited by our ancient ancestors, with the modern humans first arriving about 35,000 years ago. Their history has been determined by a series of archaeological wonders including cave paintings much like the 25,000 year old Neolithic and Paleolithic at Pileta with drawings of black, ochre, and red that are mostly just lines or patterns. Also within the cave are horses, goats, cattle, and a rare giant fish, made from a mixture of clay and fat.
Not yet as recognized as the Altamira cave, both discoveries are nevertheless still an exciting adventure in our Spain travel packages. The Cave of Altamira dates back to 12,000 BC, and the caves are full of prehistoric paintings of wild animals and impressions of human hands. When discovered in the 1870s the vivid and evocative paintings were nearly perfectly-preserved. Even Picasso commented on the paintings here: "After Altamira, everything is decadence."
More recent in comparison yet still historically significant, Spain's history with the Moors has left a fascinating array of buildings across much of its southern landscape. By 711 AD, nearly all of Iberia was captured by the Moors, a Muslim empire originating from Northern Africa. They named Cordoba their capital, and built upon a historic Roman temple to create the Great Mosque of Cordoba, now known as Mezquita-Catedral, which is one of the oldest structures still standing from the time Muslims ruled Al-Andalus. The buildings on this site are as complex as the extraordinarily rich history they illustrate.
Moorish architecture doesn't get more beautifully displayed than in nearby Granada and the Alhambra. Set in the heart of Andalucia with the majestic Sierra Nevada mountains as a backdrop, Granada blossomed into one of Europe's wealthiest and most refined cities. The Alhambra is a mighty fortress that houses an extraordinarily delicate and beautiful Moorish palace which began in the 13th century. A fantasy of "lace in stone" surrounded by arabesque gardens and fountains, it affords superb views of the Old Quarter and Sacromonte, a mountain occupied by gypsy cave dwellers. In many ways, the Alhambra represents the Moorish concept of life itself, something glorious to be ennobled by learning and enlivened by every kind of pleasure.
Beyond the medieval history, Spain is also an artistic country with exciting museums such as the Prado in Madrid, fantastic parks including the Park Guell in Barcelona, fantastic rhythms of flamenco, and surreal inspiration such as the building of the Guggenheim in Bilbao. It is a country where gothic architecture can sit nearby Moorish 14th century palaces like the Alcazar in Seville, and look both dazzling and fitting. A place where pilgrimages to Santiago are reason enough to visit and the wealth from ÃÂdiscovering the Americas found their opulent projects to fund. Spain travel packages are for those interested in history, culture, and spectacular buildings.
