More About Rwanda

Few things in life can prepare you for a meeting face to face with a gorilla. As the shot of adrenaline and excitement rushes over you, so too does the sense of being so fortunate to witness the mountain gorilla and their habitat in such an intimate way. On our Rwanda Gorilla tours, you may come for the singular experience of witnessing a gorilla family up close, but you'll leave with an overall wonder at the natural beauty of Rwanda that you'll also encounter.

In the world, there are only three countries to encounter gorillas: Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. For Rwanda gorilla tours, there are two national parks in which the gorillas reside, with Volcan National Park being the only park where we track gorillas. Residing in the high mountains of Virunga, the mountain gorillas are found at altitudes between 2,300m and 4,500m (7,500 feet to 14,700 feet). This 13,000-hectare national park protects the Rwanda sector of the Virunga Mountains, a range of six extinct and three active volcanoes which straddle the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bamboo forest is interspersed with alpine moorland, grassland and marsh.

Visiting the mountain gorillas is an adventure like none other. Starting early in the mornings, our groups will hike through the dense jungles of stunning scenery until we reach the gorilla groups. While tracking the gorillas with a local expert, we expect to be trekking for at least 30 minutes but have the possibility to be hiking for a few hours.

The specific group of gorillas we will visit on our Rwanda gorilla tours are used to human presence although they are still a wild animal. The Mountain Gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans are part of a worldwide population of just 740 individuals. The gorillas we are allowed to track belong to one of five habituated family groups. For up to five years each, these groups have undergone an extremely delicate process that has gradually brought them to tolerate the presence of humans for a brief period every day and allowed a few privileged visitors to interact with them in the wild.

In most groups there are several dozen gorillas, with the largest of the group being the male silverback weighing up to 200 kg or 440 lbs. It is an exhilarating sight to behold any gorilla from the inquisitive youngsters to the large silverback. Most of the adult primates are used to human presence and will continue on with their feeding without doing much more than just observing our groups themselves, however, the youngsters may try to approach.

The scenery around the gorillas is nothing short of spectacular, with beautiful terraced hillsides characterizing much of Rwanda's landscape. "In the heart of Central Africa, so high up that you shiver more than you sweat," wrote the eminent primatologist Dian Fossey, "are great, old volcanoes towering up almost 15,000 feet, and nearly covered with rich, green rainforest - the Virungas." Situated in the far northwest of Rwanda, the Parc des Volcans protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range that is home of the rare mountain gorilla and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.

For an adventure like none other, our Rwanda gorilla tours will leave you with experiences you'll treasure forever.
