Accommodation Spotlight – Algonquin Resort

An architectural icon, the Algonquin Resort hotel in St Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, is a coastal resort hotel, St. Andrews’ most recognized symbol and likely the most photographed building in New Brunswick.

Algonquin Resort St Andrews New Brunswick Canada The Algonquin Hotel, located in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, was built in 1889, and has a long list of esteemed guests. It is one of the accommodations on our Atlantic Canada tour.

The original Algonquin Hotel was built in 1889 by the St. Andrews Land Company (established 1883), and was a wooden shingle-style building on a massive scale.

Opening in June 1883, the 80-room hotel was designed by an architecture firm from Boston. The summer tourism industry boomed at St. Andrews by the end of the 1800s, aided by businessmen from nearby New England and Montreal, as well as residents of the town of St. Andrews.

The Algonquin Resort has a long list of esteemed guests, including royalty and heads of state, such as HRH Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, US presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson, Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald, and nearly every single Canadian PM since Confederation in 1867.

New Castle Hotels and Resorts and Southwest Properties purchased the Algonquin Resort in 2012, at which time an extensive program of restoration and renovation was undertaken.

With renovations and restoration completed in 2013, the Algonquin Resort reopened as a part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection.

Our new Atlantic Canada tour (AP1) ends in St Andrews with a sumptuous stay at this iconic property.
