Seasonality and Weather

Rain is very rare in all parts of Egypt and most days are sunny and clear. Summer temperatures often reach the upper 30's C (80's F), and those who are affected by heat may wish to avoid the period between June and September. December and January trips can experience downright chilly temperatures at night and first thing in the morning. Layering is the key as in a desert climate, temperatures will increase significantly once the sun comes up. At other times (spring, summer, fall) temperatures are warm-hot, though the temperature drops significantly at night (except in summer).

Transport and Travel Conditions

Suitability: Age 6 and up. Road transport is by private air-conditioned bus; Egypt's roads are generally good. In 2 weeks we use plane, train, felucca, donkey, camel, horse carriage, and foot. The overnight train to Upper Egypt is modern, air conditioned, and for tourists only. Berths are twin, bunk style with water and sink. Toilet facilities are basic and located at the end of the carriage. Feluccas are NOT luxury boats but a unique way of experiencing the romantic atmosphere of the Nile. Used for centuries for carrying goods and passengers along the Nile, they are open-decked sailboats with no engines or modern conveniences, and generally a crew of two or three Egyptian sailors. All meals are cooked on board by the boatmen, but culinary experts in the group are welcome to help cook if they wish. A canvas canopy can be erected for shelter from the sun by day; at night the felucca will tie up along the river bank and you can sleep on the mattresses provided on the deck. There are also plenty of cushions on deck so, although there is not a lot of space, the boat is comfortable. "Toilet" facilities are basic--for most of the felucca portion you will be finding cover on the Nile banks.
