A land of outstanding natural beauty, fascinating ancient heritage and unique allure, South America sets itself apart as a continent of incredible scope and untold depth. We set down in the capital of Ecuador, Quito, and venture to the weaving town of Calderon, on to the 'White City' of Ibarra and down the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' for a pleasant blend of urban and rural attraction, from colonial buildings and haciendas, to snow-capped volcanic peaks and green equatorial foliage. Ecuador's most important Inca site, complete with unique mortarless stonework temples, awaits us in Ingapirca and its most beautiful city, Cuenca offers no end of attraction as we stroll along cobblestone streets and admire cathedrals and monasteries whose grandeur and intricate design mirror the abundant treasures we find in the city's museums. The legendary reputation of the Galapagos comes to life as we set sail for an expedition through nature that is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. We enjoy up-close views of unusual plants and animals, such as endemic cacti, marine iguanas and lava lizards, all the while learning about unique ecosystems that have wrought extraordinary evolutionary processes. Picturesque white-sand beaches ideal for snorkelling and lunar-esque volcanic landscapes perfect for exploration only add exotic spice to this special journey in a naturalist paradise. Back on the continental mainland, we take time to investigate underground catacombs, gaze in awe at the palaces and cathedrals and relax in some of the quaint outdoor cafes that line the streets in Lima, Peru, and then it's on to the magical Machu Picchu via the lush 'Sacred Valley of the Incas'. Machu Picchu, also known as the 'Lost City of the Incas', serves as the highlight of any tour through the Andes and its unexplained purpose creates a pervading air of mystery that proves almost tangible.
