From Quito, the second highest capital city in the world, we head into the countryside to visit traditional markets in colourful villages and to venture down Ecuador's 'Avenue of the Volcanoes', a spectacular 325-kilometre valley between the cordillera ranges that boasts green equatorial lushness and snow-crested peaks. Chimborazo Reserve, created in 1987, protects the stark beauty of its volcanic landscapes and the lives of its endangered wildlife and we are treated to a broad overview of Ecuador's history by spending time in the colonial centres of Ibarra, the Inca site of Ingapirca and on the cobblestone streets of what is often considered the country's most beautiful city, Cuenca. The Galapagos Islands are without doubt some of the most rewarding and unusual destinations on the planet. Though the islands have become premier tour destinations for travellers, their untouched nature has not suffered as a result; the Galapagos have changed little since the times of Charles Darwin. With giant tortoises, land iguanas, flightless cormorants and more species of exotic flora than can be imagined, this is the ultimate experience in nature.
