Pyongyang is North Korea's showcase city—its unique character is typified by grand monuments and imposing buildings celebrating the communist ideal and deifying the country's leaders past and present. By all accounts, this journey is simultaneously one of the most poignant and surreal cultural experiences a seasoned traveller can find.

Reconstructed a decade later in a joint effort involving both sides of the ethnically divided city (Bosniaks and Croats) and the international community, the bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands today as a symbol of reconciliation and multicultural co-operation, a cautionary tale about the past and a message of hope for the future.
