More About Uganda

The outstanding natural beauty and diversity of landscape in Uganda tours has long served as a focal point of inspiration for travellers. Landlocked in Eastern Africa, Uganda is found within the African Great Lakes region as well as the Nile Basin, which affords the country with an abundance of biodiversity.

Originally part of the Buganda Kingdom, hence the name, Uganda’s historical people were traditionally hunter and gatherers until 1700 to 2300 years ago. A series of empires ruled over the small country until the 19th century when British explorers hoping to find the source of the Nile River decided to annex Uganda. After gaining independence in 1962, Uganda suffered years of political power struggles, engaged in numerous conflicts and held less than democratic elections.

These days, Uganda is an emerging tourism destination as well as one of the safest countries to travel to in Africa.

Drawn to nature, Uganda tours boast plenty of memorable experiences. National Parks with the “Big Five” (African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard, and rhinoceros) are slightly overshadowed by the gorillas in the country’s high hills and deep valleys that are encompassed in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The area around Bwindi is an excellent place for watching primates and birds and you may catch a glimpse of the noisy but evasive Chimpanzees. While the Kibale Forest National Park is home to the largest density of primates in the world, an astonishing 12 different species, Bwindi is a World Heritage Park and is home to just over half of the world's last surviving mountain gorilla population of 600 individuals. The forest is also home to 120 species of mammals, 346 species of birds, 202 species of butterflies, and 163 species of trees, making it one of the richest ecosystems in Africa.

Amongst the savannahs lined by acacia trees in Albertine Rift Valley, search for lions resting in fig trees. Cruise the Kazinga Channel, a narrow band of water connecting lakes Edward and George, for an opportunity to be amid members of Africa's largest hippo population. Stroll along the swamps of Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary to listen to the songs of the Snowy Headed Robin Cat, Black and White Casqued Hornbill, Emerald Cuckoo and a variety of weavers, warblers, and sunbirds. To track the magnificent rhino, our Uganda tours include a stop at the Ziwani Rhino Sanctuary.

Not only is Uganda a favourite for those on game drives, the scenery of the country is spectacular. The earth literally trembles at Murchison Falls, one of the world's most powerful natural flows of water found along the Nile River. A six metre (20 ft) channel downriver from Lake Victoria, pummels 43 metres (141 ft) below to the waters as they make their way to Lake Albert.

The snow-capped peaks of Mountains of the Moon, or known locally as the Rwenzori Mountain, is simply jaw dropping scenery.

The combination of scenery and animals, as well as the ability to interact with both, puts Uganda at the top of a must see list that you need to visit to believe.
