More About Malta

Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, this small group of three islands has a laid back attitude with visitors feeling like they’ve stepped back in time. Despite being one of the world’s smallest countries, within the 316 square kilometers are ancient wonders such as the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a 5000 year old necropolis and megalithic temples dating back to 3000 BC. The prehistoric temples on the Maltese islands are the oldest surviving freestanding structures in the world; dating to the 4th and 3rd millennium BCE, they were built 500-1,000 years earlier than the oldest pyramid built at Giza.

Since the early arrival of settlers from Sicily 5200 years ago, Malta has experienced many waves of immigration. Due to the strategic location between Africa and Europe, Malta has been overtaken by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Fatimids, Sicilians, Knights of St John, French and British over the centuries.

Malta has a greater density of historic sights than any other country. Starting with its unique prehistoric temples, some of the oldest stone buildings in the world, it also has Roman catacombs, medieval towns, and the extraordinary architectural and artistic legacy of the Knights of St John (the Knights of Malta). The British left behind red letter boxes and phone booths, as well as the language, in spite of which Malta (independent since 1964) remains thoroughly Maltese. The country has thankfully shaken off the British culinary legacy and is home to some excellent restaurants specialising in Mediterranean food.

Luckily for those on our Malta tours, even with the subjection of nearly every neighbouring empire, Maltese cities with all their historical sites are still compact and easily navigated by foot.
The smallest capital of Europe is found within Malta. Valletta is only 1km long and 600m wide. Founded in 1566 following the Knights' defeat of the Ottoman Turks during the "Great Siege of Malta", massive fortifications on the seaward side were built, and a defensive ditch on the landward side. The city inside the walls was then laid out on a regular street grid pattern, and adorned with churches, palaces, auberges (inns), and the famous hospital of the Knights, the Sacra Infermeria.

Further south on the archipelago, is Gozo an island 5km off the coast of the mainland accessible by a 30 minute ferry. The smaller island is also home to prehistoric temples such as Ggantija, one of the oldest and certainly the largest temple complexes of the Maltese archipelago, hence the folklore that they were built by giants. The largest megalith here is over 5m in length and is estimated to weigh over 50 tonnes! The two temples are surrounded by a monumental wall and date to the period 3600-3200 BCE, the same period as Hagar Qim.

Charming cities such as Victoria and Rabat are a joy to wander and explore but it is the Blue Hole and the panoramas of Dwejra Bay and Fungus Rock which capture the most attention on this portion of Malta tours. Dwejra has some of the most spectacular coastal stretches on the island. Two huge underground caverns in the limestone collapsed to form what is today Dwejra Bay and the Inland Sea.
Small yet stunning, Malta tours are sure to impress those who wish to see an enormous array of history within the Mediterranean.
